Farm to School

The Farm to School program connects kids to the land by
teaching how healthy food choices affect the health of
their bodies, the environment, and the community.

Environmental Science Lessons

Our farm-to-school educators teach hands-on core academic lessons in environmental science. It’s a refreshing break from test-focused, book-based learning. Students harvest the school garden’s bounty for the cafeteria, and enjoy the delicious outcomes of the hard work they’ve put in all season.

Nutrition Education

Every year, we work with 2,000 K-12 students Gunnison Watershed RE1J Schools in Gunnison and Crested Butte. We engage youth in hands-on experiences, in and out of the classroom, that nurture healthy lifestyles and food choices, cultivate life skills, and promote environmental awareness and stewardship.

Living Classrooms

A school garden offers a dynamic setting in which to integrate every discipline, including science, math, reading, environmental studies, nutrition, and health. By designing, cultivating, and harvesting the school gardens with their own hands, students can gain an understanding for natural systems and the relationship between healthy diets, farms, and communities.

Composting

In 2019, we conducted a weeklong food waste audit, teaching students the importance of composting and studied ways to reduce food waste in the school cafeteria.
