WHAT IS FOOD SECURITY?

We work to provide everyone in our community with the physical,
social, and economic access to local and nutritious food that
meet the dietary needs for an active and healthy lifestyle.

Food security is a condition in which all community residents obtain a safe, culturally acceptable, nutritionally adequate diet through a sustainable food system that maximizes community self-reliance and social justice. People are considered to be food-secure when they do not live in fear of hunger. We believe that when local food systems are supported and able to expand, local hunger issues will decline and local health will improve. By cultivating healthy, engaged citizens, we create a community where residents from all socioeconomic backgrounds feel safe, confident, valued, and connected to place and each other. By enhancing healthy connections between food, earth, and community, we can foster social justice, promote cultural integration, preserve farmable land, and ultimately prepare our community for a better future.

This program is made possible, in part, with the assistance of the Public Service Grant Program of the City of Gunnison.

Backyard Harvest Food Rescue & Relief

The Backyard Harvest Food Box program has documented success since 2014 when the client load was 30-40 households and proved to be easily scalable to meet the increased need in 2020. Our food rescue and relief program connects fresh produce from backyard gardens and farms to food-insecure residents. We now deliver to over 100 households on a weekly basis, all year long.
