Originally from Kansas City, Lucia spent the last four years in Claremont, California. She’s done work in education, college access, sustainability, indigenous science, and conservation. Last summer, she joined a Kichwa indigenous-led organization in Cotacachi, Ecuador called Kinray Hub to help with their development as a new nonprofit. Lucia’s senior thesis was about indigenous land races of maize in Mexico, the country’s Green Revolution and North American intervention, and how her abuelo, a professor of maize breeding and genetics, utilized modern science to sustain important land races. Derek knew he wanted regenerative agriculture to be his career path, but after school he realized he needed more practical, real-world experience—so when he found Mountain Roots, he knew immediately it was the right fit. What resonates most with Derek is Mountain Roots’ ability to intentionally connect earth, food, and community—because when those three work together, the whole system thrives. This season, he’s focused on immersing himself in the community, learning as much as possible about agriculture, and building real hands-on understanding of the business side of farming—how farms are started, managed, and sustained. Derek is originally from Georgia and studied horticulture at the University of Georgia, with a focus on Controlled Environment Agriculture. Before Mountain Roots, he worked as a production manager at a commercial hydroponic lettuce farm—valuable experience, but ultimately he realized he wanted to work more directly with soil, community, and diverse crop and livestock systems aligned with his values. Outside of work, Derek loves mountain biking, snowboarding, camping, hiking, and getting more into fly fishing—he’s especially excited to pursue those hobbies in Gunnison. A fun fact: he practiced martial arts for ten years and once competed in (and won) a tournament judged by Chuck Norris. She was drawn to the apprenticeship because of its intentional integration of learning and doing—and the opportunity to train in such a beautiful place. Originally from New England, Nicole brings a love of systems design and data analytics. Beginning her career with a masters degree in epidemiology, she conducted safety surveillance for the Food and Drug Administration for six years before departing to tackle a more ground-up approach to health. This season, she’ll be working alongside mentors and producers across the Gunnison Valley to develop proficiency in regenerative crop production and agribusiness, with a particular excitement for adding to the resilience of both the Earth and local community in these rapidly changing times. Before coming to Mountain Roots, Nicole worked for the grant development team with American Farmland Trust and joined the crew of a local farm through the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association.
