Urban Agriculture

The term “Urban Agriculture” refers to the conversion of yards, open lots, parking lots, and other unused spaces into food-growing spaces. In April 2010,  we converted a 2400- square-foot yard space into our first intensively-planted vegetable garden at 28 Gothic Avenue in Crested Butte.

Previously a lawn, the space produced mixed greens, potatoes, radishes, carrots, herbs, onions, beets, turnips, peas, kale, and a multitude of other foods. Located two blocks from Crested Butte’s main street, our first project is a perfect example of the huge potential urban agriculture has to make our lives more wholesome and sustainable.

In 2011, the lot was sold, and construction was begun on a new house. We scraped our soil and rebuilt our urban garden on a lot about four blocks north, on Ruth’s Road.

The 2011 and 2012 growing season at Ruth’s were incredible. Over 100 individuals contributed time and energy, and over 2,000 pounds of food were grown in what once was weed-covered stony ground.

The property owner’s asset manager recently recommended that the land use agreement should not be renewed, and we will not be able to grow food at Ruth’s Road in 2013.  We’re currently seeking a permanent growing site that will provide much larger acreage and an educational space.   got ideas? >

CAN’T MAKE IT TO THE GROUP WORK DAY,  BUT STILL WANT TO HELP OUT?

stop by any time and use our  self-serve volunteer station ...   be sure to record your hours!

If you come when no one else is at the garden, there is a whiteboard inside the trailer that lists things to do, with a corresponding layout of

the beds. We will try to update this as often as possible and feel free to add any projects you see a need for.

NOTES FROM THE RUTH’s ROAD CREW

last updated: July 9, 2012

First of all, nice work on the rain dances everyone, the garden is loving it. Secondly, thanks to everyone for all the hard work you've put in getting the Ruth's Rd garden up and rocking. After months of planning and preparation, it's finally time to taste the fruits of our labor...or at least the leaves. If you haven't been down to Ruth's Rd lately, it's an amazing sight of the bounty of summer. Our garlic and onions are huge and thriving, our salad greens are asking to be put into a bowl with dressing, and I'm worried the kale and collards are getting so big they might start bullying the smaller plants. Crazy when you think that we were just   starting to plant on the 4th of July last year...

We are pleased to announce the first regular work and harvest days at the Ruth's Road Garden! This Wednesday starting at 7 a.m. and this Friday at 5 p.m. we will be out at the garden harvesting for our produce stand on Wednesdays at the 4-Way stop and our booth at the Sunday Farmer's Market. These will be our regular work days throughout the summer so  mark your calendars.

WEEKLY WORKDAYS   WEDNESDAYS 7 am  and FRIDAYS 5 pm

If you can't make it to those days/times, feel free to come to the  garden and put in some work and take home some food. There will be an  updated to-do list on the door of the trailer, but at this point, and   with our bounty of water from the sky, we definitely need regular  attention to weeding. Just make sure you know what the weeds look like

as opposed to the veggies.

Special thanks to John and Katy Meyer for creating a temporary greenhouse to host our starts in early season.  Also, much gratitude to Katherine, Beth, Susan, and Katy for putting in so much love and   work lately - the glowing garden shows it!

Love and growth
