Our goal is to create a vibrant network of urban and community gardens in Crested Butte and Gunnison. By converting under-used public and private residential lots into organic growing spaces, our Urban and Community Ecosystem Gardens produce food, create and preserve green space, raise awareness about invasive plant species, water quality, soil health, and conservation, offer attractive wildlife habitats, nurture community spirit, and serve as a canvas for cross-discipline learning for people of all ages. They provide equal access to real food for people in all economic groups.
Paired with educational programs, our gardens build food security for people of all economic backgrounds by teaching life skills of sustainable food growing, preservation, and preparation. Our network of ecosystem gardens and educational programs for children and adults provide hands-on opportunities for our community to engage in conservation of resources, food production, and land stewardship.

by designing, cultivating, and harvesting the gardens with their own hands...
•people can gain an deeper understanding for natural systems and the relationship between healthy diets, healthy farms, and healthy communities
•Community members feel confident, valued, and connected to place and to each other
•people are able to meet their food needs without the requisite transaction of money
•community has reduced reliance on fossil fuels for food acquisition
•community members eat a more nutritious and regionally-based diet
•people learn skills needed to be active participants in a local food system
If you have space that you would be interested in having turned into a garden, please contact us, and we will send you an application. We look forward to creating a network of community gardens throughout Gunnison Valley.
2012 Ecosystem Garden Network Project Sponsor:
A Network of Sustainable Gardens

Mountain Roots Food Project is one of many organizations working to cultivate a community that is healthy self-sufficient as a whole. In Gunnison Valley, we are exploring a few different ways for people to grow food together. Shared gardens strengthen community bonds, provide food, and create recreational and therapeutic opportunities for a community. They can also promote environmental awareness and provide community education.

We want to educate, engage, and empower people to
grow, eat, buy, preserve, store, share, enjoy and value
locally grown food that is regionally based and sustainably produced.
Mountain Roots Food Project is a 501(c)3 charitable organization
